ÅMX.06 Århus–Malmö Exchange Programme (2006)

“Should I Stay or Should I Go?” - On Secondary Cities

ÅMX.06 is a curatorial and research project by Ditte Lyngkær Pedersen, Jeuno JE. Kim and Christian Schult.

The exhibition and exchange program involves artists living in Malmö in Sweden and in Århus in Denmark.

ÅMX.06 examines the existing networks of cultural production within the two cities, and encourages additional modes of collaboration between and among the artists and institutions.

One of the focus is to examine the issues of public space and public sphere specifically in the context of Malmö and Århus. The locational parameters for research is set to “secondary cities”, in order to think about and ground the research within our immediate local contexts. Århus and Malmö are almost the same size and share Copenhagen as the closest metropolis. However, the issues of networking and sustainability within cultural production differ in these cities due to their specific size and local context.

Artists, writers, curators and institutions are invited to reflect and discuss different ways of examining “secondary cities,” focusing on ways to investigate the idea of how a space and its inhabitants identifies and structures itself, and the permeability of such identity constructions as it responds and resists the impacts of societal conditions.

In association with exhibition spaces rum46, C-SAM and ARoS in Århus and Signal and Rooseum Center for Contemporary Art in Malmö, ÅMX Programme creates numerous group exhibitions, reading groups, debate afternoons, film/video screenings and a performance evening to examine existing cultural production and network among cultural producers. By dividing the research into two modules of public events and closed reading groups throughout 2006, the project foster physical and intellectual platforms to connect and exchange cultural production between the two cities.
